About the Artist

"Blue snow moon"

"Blue snow moon" 9 x 17" oil on canvas

My name is Michelle Thelen.  I’ve been studying & creating art for most of my life.  Doodling, photography, painting, I’ve tried anything & everything to do with art.  Currently I’m painting with oils and acrylics.  I also make new & recycled jewelry, which is a combination of vintage parts & pieces mixed with new.

I was born in Minnesota and grew up in Montevideo, a small town in the SW along the Minnesota River.  My grandparents lived in the big woods lake county of northern MN.  I went to college in Duluth MN along Lake Superior and then in Denver next to the Rocky Mountains.   The beauty of the different landscapes I’ve lived in and been to developed a deep passion for nature, which I draw upon when painting.  Now I am living in the suburbs of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

In the 1990’s I was involved in water quality environmental groups,  so my love of everything water was cemented and a series of riverscapes began.  That’s when I started painting plein air, which for me is a fast & furious process outside trying to catch the light and look of the day.  When I paint indoors from still life set ups or my own photos, it’s usually a slower more detailed process.

In the past 20 years I’ve been in many art shows & exhibits.  They range from the St. Paul Art Crawls, a solo exhibit in the Minneapolis Mayors office, various business venues, libraries, the MN River National Wildlife Refuge, and my favorite, a group show in Assissi, Italy.
