#261 at the Montevideo Depot, oil on canvas 20x24"

This steam train pulled into town in 1996 and people from miles around came to see.  They gave rides from Montevideo to 2 neighboring towns. It was so cool to be chugging down the tracks in an actual steam train!  My young nephews were in heaven & loving it.  Everyone had huge perma-grins. You could smell the burning coal streaming past the windows.  I had to stick my head out. Feeling the chunks of coal pelting my face was a surprise.    Most young people had never ridden on a train before.  When I was a young kid I rode to my grandma’s out in North Dakota.  That was a big deal.  There were lots of folks on the steam train who were talking about their train experiences of the past.  It’s a damn shame that America has lost most of our passenger trains.  This country was built by the railroad.  It’s about time to get our asses in gear and get more passenger trains rolling.   Ya it would cost lots of money, but it’d create tons of jobs & take thousands of cars off the roads.  The rest of the world has passenger trains everywhere, connecting everything.  There’s high speed trains across Europe, Japan & China.  Come on congress, quit making promises about creating jobs.  Get something done & get our country back on track.

A steam train came to my hometown Montevideo, MN for a celebration.  I knew it would be a great painting, so I chased the train on it’s way out of town.
